Unlike most other contact material types, silver/copper refractories tend to exhibit significantly better arc resistance due to the presence of the refractory in the alloy. Refractories such as tungsten, tungsten carbide, and molybdenum have excellent temperature and wear resistance, making them ideal for use in arcing contacts. This is especially important in applications where the arcing occurs in air, as opposed to vacuum or oil.
